Collection: Naomi Downie

Naomi Downie is a creative person of faith, living in the Inner West of Sydney, NSW. Her artistic journey has explored different mediums such as painting, theatre, spoken word performance & film.

Her practise has included championing people to explore their own artistic self. As her role as Youth Worker, she curated a large scale art exhibition around East Melbourne, that became an annual event. Specialising as an Art Therapist, she facilitated workshops in the community such as the Mercy Hospital & Women’s Detention Centre. Moving into the Aged Care field she facilitated art experiences for groups & individuals such as a large exhibition of clients, staff & management sharing their talents.

Apart of the art community in Newcastle in the early 1990’s was a exciting time & open to emerging artists, she exhibited in group shows in many of the local galleries, performed at poetry at the pub and organised at Multi-cultural Poetry night with the Fringe Festival as apart of its poetry committee co-edited a Community Poetry/Visual Arts Book titled "Poesies'.

A long held dream to publish her own poetry & art came true in 2009. Finding an artist /poet collaborator, B. Williamson, at Roarhouse ( Arts Community for people with Mental Illness), in Melbourne, embarked on a year long odyssey to create the book, "The Hidden Self". (launched Melbourne 2009, Gertude St). That same year she exhibited her series of 7 Days of Creation, acrylic paintings on creation myths, at Synergy Gallery in Northcote, Vic as a part of the Recovery Group Show. She showed at “Figure & Ground” 4 works in acrylic looking at the body & its relationship to earth with the same gallery.

Moving to Sydney for work in Aged care as a Diversional Therapist. She joined the Glebe Uniting Church & curated their Multi-Media Exhibition ‘Celeabrate’. Attending Colbourne Ave, a weekly jazz venue, became a place of refuge from work in death & dying. This bore much creative fruit with poems & artworks of the musicians. She insigaged a Zine collecting poetry, paintings, photos & stories of other regulars who were published alongside her. The Zine was launched late December 2017, before it permanently closed, with fireworks exploding & jazz improvising as contributors read their pieces.

A 7-year member of the John Ogburn Studio at Glebe, mentored by Marita Ogburn. Whom she has studied oil painting with. Regular exhibitor in group shows, at their Artist Co-op, The Harrington Art Gallery in Chippendale Sydney.
Since early 2018 she has become a member of Annandale Creative Arts Centre Collective and used her Artist in Residence there to paint her first solo Exhibition at Orchard Gallery, with South Sydney Uniting church. In 2019 she was an exhibiting member of group show “Creative Conversations 2019 theme of Land '' with 40 other artists.
